Hub City Media slashes software and licensing costs for a rapidly growing financial company

Hub City Media slashes software and licensing costs for a rapidly growing financial company. In 2007, Hub City Media was engaged by a specialty consumer finance company to review a proposed change to its software infrastructure. The company had been utilizing IBM Websphere Application Server on 15 CPUs, with support costs in excess of $100,000 annually. The company was also using GroupWise at a cost of more than $100,000 annually.

The original expansion plan

Driven by rapid growth, the company was considering a purchase of more than 30 new application servers at a cost of $350,000 plus related support fees estimated to reach $300,000 annually. The company was also considering implementing a new Identity Management system.

All told, this client was prepared to spend more than $1,050,000 over two years to implement its IBM-based software strategy.

A more cost-effective alternative

Hub City Media was hired to assess this the strategy and provide feedback to the management team. After evaluating the clients roadmap, Hub City came up with a far more cost-effective solution.

Based on Hub City's recommendations, this client chose to port its largest application from IBM WebSphere to Sun's GlassFish Application Server. Once the port was completed, application performance proved superior to WebSphere.

Comprehensive solution at far less cost

This solution not only delivered equivalent or better performance, it also provided dramatic cost savings.

The total cost of the Java Enterprise Suite was $130,000 per year, including unlimited right-to-use and Premium Support. The Suite purchased included the Application Server (unlimited CPUs), Communication Suite (mail and calendaring), Portal, Directory, Access Manager (SSO) and Identity Manager. By removing Websphere, the company was able to reduce its software spend by $350,000 in year one and eliminate $200,000 in support costs.

Hub City's recommended strategy provided software and licensing cost savings of nearly $800,000 for this client in just the first two years.
