The Process

Hub City Media's Solaris/SPARC to VMware solution is typically a five step process:

1. Inspect: Hub City Media will inspect the architecture and components of all systems to be migrated, evaluating technology, reviewing documentation and talking to the subject matter experts on your staff. This evaluation will help determine the scope of effort and overall approach to the migration.
2. Design: We'll then design the complete migration process and the new VMware system architecture, which will be deployed into your existing VMware virtualization infrastructure or into a new environment designed by HCM. A rigorous test plan will also be developed.
3. Migrate: During the Migration phase, Hub City Media will build out the new virtualization environment using either a pure VMware or hybrid approach. We'll then migrate old systems to the the new virtualization system in a test environment.
4. Test: The new environment will be rigorously tested to ensure that it performs according to all requirements and test plans. Hub City Media will then turn the system over to the customer to perform any user acceptance tests.
5. Deploy: Once the customer is satisfied that the virtualized system functions properly, Hub City Media will assist the customer in promoting the new environment into production. This may include provisioning new hardware for the production environment or simply promoting the test environment to production status.

The benefits of virtualization are many - which is why most leading enterprises today have some sort of virtualization incorporated into their production systems. But for customers with large investments in Sun Solaris/SPARC systems, the task of migrating to a virtualized VMware infrastructure can be daunting.

Another approach for customers with multi-tiered or other compartmentalized systems is to use a mixture of virtualization technologies. This hybrid approach, using Solaris Zones, can speed up the migration process. The trade-off is that it can require additional post-migration support to maintain both Solaris and VMware virtualization systems.
